Musculoskeletal Scan Description

A musculoskeletal ultrasound scan provides pictures of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and soft tissue throughout the body. This includes the shoulder (rotator cuff), Knee, Ankle, Wrist, Achilles tendon etc.

Ultrasound images are typically used to help diagnose:

  • Muscle or tendon tears.
  • Bleeding or other fluid collections within the muscles, bursae and joints.
  • Benign and malignant soft tissue tumours.
  • Early changes of rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Joint effusion (fluid) or synovial (lining of the joint) thickening.
  • Soft tissue masses (lumps/bumps)

What to expect

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing . You may be asked to remove all clothing and jewellery in the area to be examined.
