An Abdominal Ultrasound Scan is often requested by a doctor in the investigation of abdominal pain. It gives a structural view of many abdominal organs, including the liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, prostate gland, uterus and ovaries.

Abdominal ultrasound scan can be used to diagnose the following or conditions:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Bloating
  • Heartburn
  • Indigestion
  • Abdominal pain
  • Gallstones
  • Liver damage
  • Inflamed pancreas
  • Kidney abnormality
  • Aortic aneurysm
  • Enlarged spleen
  • Prostate problems

What to expect

For an ultrasound of the upper abdomen (liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and kidneys) the patient is asked to fast for three hours before the scan. A full bladder is required if the pelvis is included.
